Processed locally on your device
Everything runs on your device until the review step. Only the metadata you approve is sent to the research team. Raw conversation text is never transmitted.
Only metadata is recorded
We store anonymized labels (task type, delegation level, cognitive process). Not your actual messages.
You review before anything is sent
You see every extracted segment and can exclude or edit anything before submitting.
No name or email collected
Responses are linked to a randomly generated SHA-256 study ID, not your name or email.
Encrypted storage
Any metadata we receive is stored on an encrypted cloud platform.
Withdraw anytime
Close the browser to stop. Email us to request deletion of anything already submitted.
About this research
Existing models of AI and automation are built on assumptions about what AI can do. We aim to measure what workers actually do: what they hand off, what they keep, and how much they verify. We are currently in the pilot stage (N=50 developers), expanding to 20,000+ participants across occupations.
Research team
Led by UC Santa Barbara, approved by the UC Santa Barbara Institutional Review Board (IRB), and supported by the Google AI & Economy Researchers Program. SkillBench and Andela support the study's technical development and participant recruitment.

Eligibility
You need all three of the following.
Regularly use an AI tool (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Cursor, or similar) at least a few times a week.
Use ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for at least some of your work.
18 years or older and comfortable reading English.
